Balconies and canopies are commonly constructed with thermally conductive materials such as steel and concrete. High thermal conductivity causes heat flow to transfer through the building envelope, decreasing the R value (thermal resistance) of the wall. For example, steel balcony point connections and concrete balcony linear connections can reduce the R value of a wall by up to 60%.

Building Envelope Penetrations

Balconies and canopies that penetrate the building envelope can create a thermal bridge. ClimaSpec TB Thermal Breaks can be incorporated between the steel-to-steel and concrete-to-steel structural elements to establish a thermally isolated connection, reducing the thermal energy transfer.

ClimaSpec TB is designed for bolt through connections and accounts for shear, compressive stress, grip lengths, and other design considerations. ClimaSpec TB is fabricated to common balcony and canopy connection specifications, making installation quick and simple.
